Vetal Hill

Description

Vetal Hill is an excellent hill in the city limits of Pune, India. The mountain has an elevation of 2600 ft. Within the city limits, it is the highest point in the city. There is a temple named Vetala situated on the top of the hill. According to some Legend, hill derives its name from this temple. The hill is also famous for its Marathi name, Vetal Tekdi. You can see the whole of Pune from the top of the hill on a clear day.

History

Vetal Hill was inaugurated in 1997 by V. N. Joshi and M. S. Kumbhojakar of Agharkar Research Institute, Pune. From last few years, authorities are doing a great job in increasing the number of species of flora and fauna. They are again linking humanity from wildlife. That is a good job we should also do something in this context.

Species of flora and fauna present here itself is a point of attraction as approx more than 416 species of angiosperms belonging to more than 100 families can be noticed here. Parasites like Striga and Dendropthoe can also be seen here. In the months of monsoon Diversity of herbaceous species can also be reported. Another significant characteristic of the area is absent of epiphytic species.
